I’m off to the Middle East tomorrow for some final dissertation travel. Meanwhile, here are some photos of the colonnaded street at Apamea.

Theodoret’s Digs 1 November 2008

Here’s some photos from Theodoret’s hometown of Cyrrhus in northern Syria. Theodoret was famously outspoken on the ‘errors’ of pagan gods. In his Ellenikon Therapeutike Pathematon (“Remedy for Greek [i.e. pagan] Maladies”), he condemned representations of Venus as “more shameless than that of any prostitute standing in front of a brothel” (3.79) and caricatured Dionysos “that limb-loosener and effeminate creature” (3.80).

The ‘Modern’ Ruins of Bosra 21 October 2008

The ‘basalt city’ of Bosra is best known from its wonderfully well-preserved Roman theatre. However, the city is not only rich in ancient ruins. Large parts of the ‘modern’ city that was built reusing bits and pieces of ancient buildings as well as utilising the Roman street grid have themselves been abandoned. This makes for an extremely interesting multitemporal ruinscape that also tells a story of modern dislocation and abandonment.

Tricastin and the Visual Culture of French Street Activism 30 August 2008

Parts of the Rhône valley were this year marred by a small-scale environmental scare when in July uranium was accidentally released from the Tricastin nuclear power plant, a notable feature on the A7. This is, of couse, a serious matter with both political and environmental implications. However, what caught my eye and will be focus of this post were the different kinds of visual culture employed to comment on and respond to such an event in the streets of local communities. Here are two radically different examples, one artistic and one ranting, from the streets of Avignon and Nyons:

I’ve previously posted some photos of Danish winter. Now that the summer appears to be (almost) officially over, I thought I would post some images of how my native country looks like during this time of year.
